Packing & Gear

What to pack for a Vermont retreat

A useful packing list for a shared-house retreat in Vermont, with layers, Shabbos essentials, and items to confirm with your hosts.

Begin with the event information

Read the information for your specific retreat before packing. The venue, season, activities, and room arrangement determine what you need. Confirm bedding, towels, meals, and arrival details with the hosts.

Keep the address and contact information available offline. If you are carpooling, agree on luggage space in advance and label any shared food or equipment you are bringing.

Bring layers you can actually use

Pack clothes you can layer for time indoors and outdoors. Include a warm layer, a rain layer, comfortable shoes, and enough socks for your planned activities. Check the forecast close to departure and adjust your bag accordingly.

For a walk or hike, use footwear suitable for the route and conditions. Ask the organizers what kind of activity is planned so you can pack for the actual weekend.

Keep Shabbos essentials together

Pack your Shabbos clothes, siddur, and the personal items you use, such as a tallis or other religious essentials. Check what the retreat provides. Put these items in one accessible part of your luggage so you can settle in smoothly.

If you have questions about carrying, access to your room, or anything else that affects your Shabbos arrangements, ask before traveling. Event-specific instructions are more useful than assumptions based on a previous stay.

Add the small practical things

Bring toiletries, your medication, a reusable water bottle, and a small bag for outdoor activities. Include a charger for travel and the parts of the weekend when you use your phone. A separate bag for laundry helps keep a shared room comfortable.

If the venue has a pool or other special facilities, check the schedule and what you need to bring. For Hamsa Nomads events, follow the arrangements shared for that event, including any separate swim hours.

Pack lightly enough to share the space

A shared-house weekend works best when everyone can keep their belongings together. Bring what you need and leave room for communal areas to stay comfortable. A compact bag is easier to move, store, and fit into a carpool.

Before leaving home, check the event details once more. Before leaving the retreat, check outlets, bathrooms, drawers, and the space around your bed. Those two small checks prevent many forgotten items.
