Kosher Airbnb for Shabbos: What We Check Before Booking a Rental House
A practical Shabbos rental checklist covering smart locks, sensors, kitchen assumptions, walking distance, Friday arrival and shared-house logistics before you book an Airbnb or vacation rental.

A listing saying ‘kosher’ is not enough
We would never book a rental just because the description says kosher, Jewish-friendly or Shabbos-friendly. Those words can mean completely different things to different hosts and guests.
Before paying, decide what you personally need from the kitchen and the property. If you need to kasher anything, bring your own equipment or avoid using parts of the kitchen, that should be planned before the first grocery bag arrives.
Ask about the door before you ask about the pool
Smart locks, keypads, motion lights, security systems and automatic doors can turn into a Friday problem very quickly. STAR-K specifically flags sensors and automations as issues to investigate in short-term rentals.
We ask how the front door opens, whether a physical key exists, what lights are motion-activated and whether cameras or alarm systems create any practical concern. The host may not understand the halachic question, so ask what the device actually does.
Kitchen photos do not tell you the kitchen history
A clean kitchen is not the same thing as a kitchen that matches your kashrut standards. A vacation rental has been used by other guests, and you usually do not know what happened in the oven, sink or cookware before you arrived.
For a group weekend, we prefer deciding the food system in advance: what comes prepared, what equipment belongs to us, which surfaces we will use and who is responsible for the setup. One clear plan is better than five people making assumptions.
Walking distance only matters if you know where you are walking
If you are relying on a shul, minyan or community for meals, verify the actual address and current schedule before booking the house. A map pin can look close until you realize the walk crosses a highway or the service you found online is seasonal.
If you are making your own minyan at the house, that changes the search completely. Then the priority becomes enough sleeping space, a useful common room and a layout that works for the group.
Arrive early enough to discover what the listing forgot
STAR-K recommends arriving with time to familiarize yourself with a rental before Shabbos. We agree. The worst time to discover that the bedroom light is controlled by a motion sensor is five minutes before candle lighting.
Our Friday rule is simple: the house should be understood before everyone changes for Shabbos. Keys, food, lights, bedrooms and bathrooms first. Then the weekend can actually start.
