Shabbos Weekend Getaways From NYC: Where We’d Actually Go
A practical guide to Shabbos-friendly weekend directions from NYC: Catskills, Poconos, Berkshires and Southern Vermont, with the questions to check before booking.

Start with Friday, not with the destination
When we look at a weekend away from New York, the first question is not whether the house has a hot tub. It is what Friday actually looks like. A place that is two and a half hours away on Sunday can become a completely different trip when everyone leaves Brooklyn or Manhattan at 2:30 on a Friday.
We look at candle-lighting for the exact destination, add real traffic margin, then work backward. If the weekend only works when every car arrives exactly on time, it is already too tight.
Catskills and Hudson Valley: easiest when you want the Jewish logistics nearby
For a group that wants a house weekend without feeling completely removed from Jewish infrastructure, the Catskills and Hudson Valley are the obvious direction. There are more kosher-shopping options, established Jewish communities and a lot of houses built for groups.
The tradeoff is that it can feel less like leaving the New York orbit. For us, that is sometimes a feature. If the goal is mostly the people, the meals and Shabbos together, easy logistics can matter more than dramatic scenery.
Poconos: good for a house weekend if you bring the plan with you
The Poconos work well when the property is the weekend: one big house, outdoor space, a game room, maybe a pool, and enough bedrooms to keep everyone together. It is also a direction where we would confirm every Jewish detail before paying.
Do not assume a nice vacation rental means the Shabbos side will sort itself out. Know where the food is coming from, whether you need your own minyan, what the locks and sensors do, and how far anyone expects to walk.
Berkshires: a calmer option with an active Jewish anchor
Lenox and the Berkshires are a different kind of weekend. It is more town-and-mountains than giant-rental-house energy, and Chabad of Berkshire County lists regular Shabbos services in Lenox. That gives you an actual Jewish anchor to research instead of guessing.
We would still confirm the specific weekend directly. Service schedules, meals and visitor arrangements can change. But for a couple or a smaller group that wants culture, walking and a quieter weekend, this direction makes sense.
Southern Vermont: worth the drive when the property is part of the point
Southern Vermont is where we go when we want the trip to feel like a retreat. Mount Snow describes itself as about four hours from New York City, which is exactly why Friday planning matters. Once you are there, though, the mountains and a good group house can carry the whole weekend.
If you are choosing Vermont for Shabbos, we would rather build the Jewish setup into the house than depend on improvising it after arrival. That is the format behind a lot of Hamsa Nomads weekends.
