Rosh Hashanah Retreats in the Northeast: What Actually Matters
Before booking a Rosh Hashanah retreat, compare the minyan, meals, religious rhythm, group fit, lodging and the hours between services—not only the hotel or estate photos.

The retreat is the hours between the formal parts
Rosh Hashanah has an obvious structure: davening, meals, shofar when applicable, Torah, another meal. What tells you whether the retreat is actually good is everything in between.
Where do people go after lunch? Is there one living room where everyone ends up? Can you take a walk? Is there a game room, porch or pool? Or does the group disappear into hotel rooms and only reappear for the next scheduled thing?
Ask directly about the religious setup
I would want a clear answer on minyan, tefillah, food, kashrut and what the organizer means by a Rosh Hashanah program. In 2026, Rosh Hashanah began Friday night, September 11 and continued through Sunday night, September 13, which made the Shabbos/Yom Tov flow especially important.
Do not assume that 'High Holiday weekend' tells you enough. The page should explain what the actual days feel like.
Small retreat and big hotel are different products
A big hotel gives you more people and usually more formal programming. A house retreat gives you repeated contact with the same group. Neither one is automatically better, but they solve different problems.
For Hamsa Nomads, the house format is the point. You keep ending up with the same people at meals, in the living room, on a walk and late at night. That makes coming alone much easier than a one-night event where you get one chance to meet everyone.
Vermont works because the setting supports the downtime
Southern Vermont is close enough to drive from a lot of the Northeast, but it still feels like you left. For our 2026 Rosh Hashanah weekend, the property had an indoor pool, hot tub, game room, gym and mountain setting. Those were not the purpose of the Chag. They were what made the unstructured time comfortable.
If you are comparing retreats, that is the lens I would use: does the property help the group live together for the holiday, or is it just a nice room to sleep in?
