Going Alone to a Jewish Shabbos Retreat: What to Check Before You Book

Joining a Shabbaton on your own? Check the group, room arrangements, shared activities and arrival plan, with a look at Studio Shabbos in New Jersey.

Start with the people and the program

You find a Jewish weekend retreat you like, then realize none of your friends can come. Before you close the page, check whether the program gives you ways to get to know the group. Shared meals, group games and a workshop can give you a starting point when you arrive on your own.

Look for a clear description of who the weekend is for. A Shabbaton for Jewish young adults will feel different from a family program or a couples’ weekend. Ask the hosts about the group if the page leaves that unclear. Hamsa Nomads brings together Jewish young adults and young professionals, with Shabbos, activities and shared meals at the center of our weekends.

Choose a sleeping arrangement you understand

Read the room descriptions before comparing prices. A bed to yourself can still mean a shared bedroom. A private room means something different. Ask about the arrangement that matters to you before you commit.

At Studio Shabbos, the booking page distinguishes bunk beds, twin beds, queen or king beds in shared rooms and a private-room option, subject to availability. The lower-priced bed-sharing option is for two named friends sharing one queen or king bed. Someone attending alone should choose an individual option or ask the team about suitable arrangements.

Find a comfortable way to join in

Think about the activities you enjoy. If you like making things, sitting beside someone at a workshop gives you a shared task while you talk. If you prefer games or conversation, look for those in the Shabbos program too.

Studio Shabbos combines an art-and-creativity theme with a full Shabbos weekend. We’re planning perfume making and Havdalah sets before Shabbos, creative games and paracha-inspired activities during Shabbos, then painting and resin projects afterward. The program is in development. You can check the latest details on the event page without needing to call yourself an artist.

Check the Shabbos setup before traveling

Ask about kosher meals, the minyan and the house arrangements. If you have a dietary need or a question about religious standards, tell the hosts ahead of time. Clear answers make it easier to decide whether the weekend suits you.

Studio Shabbos includes shared kosher meals, and we plan a minyan with a Sefer Torah. We share the exact Ocean City address and arrival details with confirmed guests. Plan your Friday travel around those instructions and local candle-lighting time. Ask us about arrival timing before booking transport.

Use the application to introduce yourself

Tell the hosts where you’re coming from, what interests you and that you’re attending alone. Include room preferences or questions you need answered. You can also ask about the weekend before applying through the contact option on the event page.

Studio Shabbos takes place November 6–8, 2026 in Ocean City, New Jersey. Explore the program, choose a room option and submit your request. The team reviews availability and sends the next steps; submitting the request does not confirm your place.
