Jewish bases in Vietnam

Vietnam currently has four main Chabad/Jewish traveler bases. Always message ahead for Shabbat meals, minyan details, kosher food orders, and holiday schedules.

Hanoi

The best kosher anchor for the north. Use it for Old Quarter exploring, coffee culture, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay / Cat Ba, and before heading to Sapa, Ha Giang, or Cao Bang.

Sapa

A mountain base for rice terraces, trekking, local villages, Fansipan, and northern views. Great for travelers who want nature without immediately jumping into the intense motorbike routes.

Hoi An

The central Vietnam anchor: lantern streets, beach, cafés, cycling, tailoring, nearby Da Nang, My Son, Hue Imperial City, and easy slow travel energy.

1Start in HanoiOld Quarter, coffee, museums, Ninh Binh, Ha Long / Cat Ba

Base yourself near kosher support, then explore the capital and northern day trips.

  • Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake, Train Street area, cafés, egg coffee culture.
  • Temple of Literature, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum area, Hoa Lo Prison Museum, Women’s Museum.
  • Day or overnight trips: Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, Lan Ha Bay, Cat Ba.
2Sapa mountain stopRice terraces, trekking, villages, Fansipan

Go north for terraces, cooler air, villages, and mountain hikes.

  • Rice terrace walks, Muong Hoa Valley, Cat Cat / Ta Van village areas.
  • Fansipan cable car or hiking options depending on weather and fitness.
  • Good place to slow down before choosing a more adventurous loop.
3Choose Ha Giang or Cao BangBig adventure loop vs. calmer northern route

Ha Giang is the legendary loop. Cao Bang is stunning, less chaotic, and often feels like a calmer alternative.

  • Ha Giang Loop: dramatic mountain passes, Dong Van Karst Plateau, Ma Pi Leng Pass, Meo Vac. Best with a proper group or Easy Rider unless you are experienced and legally covered.
  • Cao Bang: Ban Gioc Waterfall, Nguom Ngao Cave, karst valleys, Pac Bo historical site, Ba Be Lake extension.
  • For self-driving, check Vietnam’s motorbike license and international driving permit rules carefully before riding.
4Central Vietnam: Hue → Da Nang → Hoi AnImperial City, beaches, Marble Mountains, lantern old town

Move toward central Vietnam and use Hoi An as the Shabbat base, but do not skip Hue if you love history.

  • Hue Imperial City: major landmark with citadel, royal history, tombs, pagodas, and a completely different feel from Hoi An.
  • Da Nang, Marble Mountains, My Son Sanctuary, Cham Museum, Hai Van Pass.
  • Hoi An lantern streets, river walks, tailoring, cafés, cycling, and An Bang Beach.
5Finish in Ho Chi Minh City / SaigonSouthern kosher base, Mekong, Cu Chi, Phu Quoc, Con Dao

Use Saigon as the southern kosher anchor and gateway to the Mekong or islands.

  • Ben Thanh Market area, War Remnants Museum, Independence Palace, colonial-era architecture, Chinatown / Cholon.
  • Day trips: Cu Chi Tunnels, Mekong Delta, Can Tho floating markets.
  • Southern add-ons: Phu Quoc for easier beach energy, Con Dao for remote nature and history.

Kosher planning notes

  • Contact Chabad before arrival for Shabbat meals, holiday meals, minyan, kosher food orders, and delivery options.
  • Do not assume kosher meals are available without advance notice, especially outside Hanoi and Saigon.
  • For Shabbat, plan walking distance, keys/access, hotel location, and whether the area is practical after dark.
  • Bring backup shelf-stable food, especially before loops, hikes, sleeper buses, and islands.

Transportation strategy

Vietnam is long. Use sleeper buses and trains when you want to save money and turn travel into part of the experience. Fly when the distance is too large or you need to protect time before Shabbat.

Sleeper busesTrainsDomestic flightsShabbat buffer

Best rule: never arrive right before Shabbat from a long bus, border-style transfer, mountain loop, or island ferry. Build in a buffer.
